Finding Connection Through Clay: New Beginnings in 2025

Happy New Year, friends! Wednesday the 29th is Lunar New Year, the year of the snake. It’s my year, and a year I anticipate growth and change. So far 2025 has already brought its fair share of challenges, including the devastating wildfires in LA County. My heart and prayers go out to everyone affected by this disaster. This serves as a powerful reminder that, more than ever, community is my go-to source for healing and strength. As I reflect on the power of community and creativity, I feel hopeful about what’s to come. This year, I’m focusing on building deeper IRL connections and creating opportunities for others to experience the transformative power of working with clay. Here’s a little about what’s happening at The Femme Sole Studio this year and how you can join me on this journey.

Shifting Focus to My Website

This year marks a big shift in how I connect with you. I’m working to reduce my reliance on social media and focus instead on REAL LIFE interaction, engaging conversations, and ultimately driving ceramic focused individuals to my website. Social media has its benefits, but I’ve found it overwhelming at times, “doom scrolling” especially with the constant stream of sensationalist news and the now rise of mis-information. By redirecting my energy, I’m creating a more intentional space where you can find all the latest updates about Femme Sole, events,

If you’re a fan of my ceramics, workshops, or just curious about the magic of clay, I’d love for you to visit my website regularly, explore my work. By subscribing to my email list, you’ll be the first to hear about new classes, exhibitions, and special announcements. I promise not to bombard your email box, and I won’t be completely pulled away from my social media account, I am just practicing a new approach. I will still post pertinent information there, but In the mean time expect to hear the phone ringing, receive more newsletters, and texts from me :)

New Pottery Wheel Throwing Lessons for Couples and Friends

I’m thrilled to announce a brand-new offering: pottery wheel throwing lessons designed for 2. Whether you’re looking for a unique date night idea or a creative way to bond with loved ones, these lessons are all about making memories, having fun, and getting your hands dirty with clay. No experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and willingness to learn! The lessons take place in my studio on Long Island, a peaceful and inspiring space where you can unwind and explore your creativity. Message me direct for more information.

Clay Workshops on Long Island

In addition to wheel-throwing lessons, I’ll be hosting a variety of clay workshops throughout the year. Of course you can find me at Growinshade in Islip, and I’ll be hosting a series of other intimate workshops at my studio in Mastic Beach. These will be perfect for anyone looking to try something new, whether you’re interested in hand-building techniques, or creating your own ceramic art from start to finish. Workshops are tailored to beginners and intermediate artists, so there’s something for everyone. Stay tuned for announcements in my newsletters.

Finding Light Through Creativity and Community

As I step into 2025, I’m reminded of the creative influence of artists like David Lynch, who approached life with meditation, creativity, and a deep connection to his inner vision. Ray and I often find inspiration in his work—whether through his movies, writing, or music—finding escape and taking a deep dive into his imaginative worlds. Creativity has always been a guiding light for me, and I hope to share that with you through my ceramic art and workshops.

Thank you for being part of my community and for supporting Femme Sole Ceramics. Your friendship, encouragement, and enthusiasm mean the world to me. Here’s to a year filled with creativity, connection, and growth—both on and off the wheel.

With love and gratitude,

xx
Jess

Whats new in the Pottery Studio?

Hey friends!

It’s been a minute since I last shared an update, but here we are! For the most current scoop, follow me on Instagram @femmesole—that’s where all the action happens!

Since my last post, it’s been a whirlwind here on Long Island. I wrapped up the last of the summer coast artisan fairs, It ended on a super high note Awarded for best in my category of “ceramics” at The Outdoor Art and Music Festival hosted by Gallery North. Being awarded means I have the opportunity to show case my work during the Winners circle exhibition at the gaLLERY. I then ended September with my debut solo show at The Storefront in Bellport, and participated in a group exhibition with The Montauk Artists Association at The Depot Gallery in Montauk, New York. And in case you missed it, I exhibited my Heart of Stone series at The Other Art Fair in Gowanus, brooklyn at Zero Space—an experience that’s always a mix of fun and inspiration with so many talented New York artists and beyond.

Currently, I’m honored to have one of my sculptures, Words Our Armor, on display with the GEN-ART East End Artist show in Riverhead, NY. This piece holds a lot of meaning for me. It’s a hand-sculpted body form adorned with hand-painted text from the historic Roe v. Wade decision in 1972. These were words meant to protect a woman’s right to choose, a right dismantled in 2022. To capture that painful shift, I intentionally broke the sculpture, emphasizing the fractured armor once meant for protection.

And with the holidays on the way, I’m wrapping up my final wholesale orders—and I have a special collaboration with Home Union that I can't wait to unveil! Think unique ceramics with a twist. Stay tuned, my friends, for something truly special!

Catch you soon, and as always, thanks for following along on this wild art journey! 🖤

Announcement:

Alchemy: The Art of Transformation – My Debut Solo Exhibition

Hey Friends!!!

I am thrilled to announce my debut solo exhibition, Alchemy: The Art of Transformation, opening September 29th at The Storefront in Bellport. Curated by the insightful Melissa Feldman, this show brings together a selection of my work from the past several years as a full-time artist. The title, Alchemy, speaks to the transformative nature of the CreATIVE process—where raw materials evolve into sculptural beauty—and my own journey of growth as both an artist and small business owner.

In this exhibition, you will experience a range of works, each reflecting a unique aspect of my creative exploration. One key series, Pulse, features organic abstract forms that act as totems of energy. These sculptures are reminiscent of reef-like structures, reflecting my imagination of them as sanctuaries for vulnerable marine life—guardians of the sea, if you will.

Another highlight is the representation of my early body series. These wheel-thrown vessels, hand-sculpted to form abstract shapes, include white porcelain pieces with glazed interiors that allow light to softly bend over the curves, as well as others draped in bronze metallic glazes that symbolize armor and protection. Additionally, you'll find three Raku vessels, embodying the dramatic alchemy of their firing process, where carbon smoke and oxygen reduction conjure metallic reflections from the glaze.

Facets, another grouping, consists of hand-built forms crafted from slabs, then “hammered” to create multi-faceted surfaces. Each facet is painted with contrasting light and dark glazes, framed by the raw, speckled stoneware underneath, offering a bold interplay of textures and tones.

Lastly, Organic Rhythms shares a story of hand-built forms created through coiling and pinching hand building techniques, Fluid biomorphic shape made with rhythmic, repetitive movement is embedded in these pieces. The coiling process involves sweeping gestures, while pinching gestures a staccato rhythm, like a song the rhythms draws viewers in to engage with the forms like a dance,.

This exhibition is about more than just my work—it's a reflection of my own transformation. Six years ago, I took my first clay workshop, and since then, I have evolved as an artist and small business owner. Alchemy celebrates my journey and the imagination of turning raw potential into tangible form,

I invite you to join me in celebrating the opening of Alchemy: The Art of Transformation and to experience the energy, rhythm, and beauty that clay can become.

Celebrating 4 Years at Montauk Artists Association Art Show On The Green

Hey Friends!!!!!

This weekend marks a significant milestone in my journey as an artist—my 4th year participating in the Montauk Artists Association Art Show on the Green! I’m filled with excitement as I prepare to showcase a collection that not only spans the evolution of my work over the years but also reflects the deepening of my craft and vision.

What You’ll See: A Glimpse into My Ceramic World

Functional Pieces: At the heart of my practice is the belief that art should be woven into the fabric of everyday life. My collection of functional ceramics, including the beloved Signature Collection, embodies this philosophy by capturing the tranquil beauty of everyday objects. From texturally glazed bowls to hand-thrown vases, each piece is thoughtfully crafted to bring elegance and calm to your daily rituals. Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee or arranging fresh flowers, these ceramics are designed to enhance the simple moments we often take for granted. And with their blend of utility and artistry, they also make the perfect gift for your weekend host, adding a touch of creativity to any gathering.

Artistic Sculptures: This year, I’m excited to bring a selection of my most cherished sculptural works, each with its own story and significance. Among them is my ‘Heart of Stone’ series, which has been featured at The Every Woman Biennial and The Other Art Fair. This series has resonated with many viewers, capturing the delicate balance between fragility and strength that lies at the core of the human experience. In addition, I’ll be showcasing pieces from my ‘PROGENITOR’ series, a collection of Raku-finished skulls and masks that explore themes of identity, human evolution, and the ancient ties that bind us. These sculptures invite contemplation and conversation, offering a visual narrative that speaks to the shared history of all people.

Current Work: As always, I’m committed to pushing the boundaries of my craft, and this year’s new pieces reflect my latest explorations in glaze chemistry and surface texture. These works are designed to engage the senses in unexpected ways, transforming the act of viewing into a multi-sensory experience. I’ve been experimenting with innovative glazing techniques that create unique textures and finishes, challenging the conventional perception of ceramics. These new forms continue my journey of blending function with art, inviting a deeper connection between the viewer and the material. Through these pieces, I hope to inspire others to see ceramics not just as objects but as a bridge between the tangible and the intangible, the everyday and the extraordinary.

Event Details:

  • Date: August 16, 17, 18

  • Time: Friday 12 - 6pm | Saturday & Sunday 10am - 6pm

  • Location: Montauk Artists on the Green

I’m looking forward to connecting with you this weekend, sharing the stories behind each piece, and celebrating another summer filled with art, creativity, and community. Your continued support means the world to me, and I can’t wait to see familiar faces and meet new ones as we gather once again in this beautiful setting.

Thank you for being a part of this journey, and I hope to see you there!

From Chaos to Creation: My Journey to a New Ceramic Studio

Hey Friends!!!

I have some exciting updates to share with you all about a major transition in my life and work. As many of you know, being a self-employed artist, production potter, and educator is a juggling act that often takes up a lot of space and energy. For years, my ceramic studio swallowed my living room and dining room, transforming my home into a bustling creative space. While it was a time of intense productivity and growth, it also came with its own set of challenges.

The Chaos of My Home Studio

Those early days were a whirlwind of creativity and chaos. My living room and dining room were overtaken by clay, glazes, tables upon tables for hand building and storing greenwares. It was hard to escape the constant demands of my work, as the boundaries between my home life and studio life blurred. Despite the chaos, I look back on those days with fondness. The achievements I made in that space, the late nights of inspiration, and the relentless pursuit of my passion were all stepping stones on my artistic journey.

A New Beginning: Renovating the Shed

Recognizing the need for a dedicated creative space, I embarked on the journey of renovating an existing shed in my backyard. This transition was both thrilling and necessary. The result is a beautiful, modern studio full of light and designed to inspire. The new studio not only provides a serene environment for my creative process but also helps me maintain a healthier work-life balance.

A Home Transformed

With my new studio shed complete, I have begun to reclaim my home. I am arranging the interior space to feel more like a living space and a place to effectively showcase my sculptures. It’s a refreshing change to have a clear distinction between my home and work environments, allowing me to fully relax and enjoy my living space.

Looking Forward

While I feel nostalgic for the chaotic days of my home studio, I am incredibly excited about what lies ahead. The new studio shed marks the beginning of a new chapter, filled with possibilities and opportunities for growth. I look forward to creating new works, exploring innovative techniques, and sharing my journey with all of you.

Thank you for being part of this adventure with me. Stay tuned for more updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses into my new creative space!
