Progenitor No. 27
From the Progenitor Series, This is a hand built mask, made with white stoneware, finished in a raku copper glaze, and placed in a reduction chamber with locally collected leaves and grass to conjure carbon smoke and fire to achieve the atmospheric effects of an iridescent, metallic surface. The raku’s process lends to the distressed nature of the mask.

The title PROGENITOR is the idea that we all come from one being, a primogenitor. Somewhere in between is the realm of my existence in a vast spectrum of time. This is a series of hand built skulls and masks of varying ceramic clay bodies that are Raku finished. I dream of a living species in a time that may have existed in the far distant past and how they would evolve in the future. An ancient civilization and the creatures that share the land. The hand sculpted skulls appear distressed to represent ancient aged bone material, as if excavated. They are Raku fired in a white crackle glaze so the carbon smoke can absorb and highlight the cracks. This is to emphasize the ancient age of the object. The masks represent a time in the future, creature-like, humanoid, bearing slight resemblance to the original skulks. The masks are Raku fired and finished with copper rich metallic glazes to contrast the skull's white smokey cracks. The metallic rich luster portrays a feeling of a world in the future. Join me on my journey as I discover this ancient species and link their evolution to the findings of the future.
