Progenitor No.6
From the Progenitor Series, this is a hand built mask, made of white stoneware, and then finished in a raku copper glaze. The mask was gas fired in an outdoor kiln and removed at peak temperature of 1850 degrees F. It was then placed in a reduction chamber filled with locally collected leaves and grasses conjuring smoke and fire. The chamber is then sealed and the environment is starved of oxygen. The black carbon smoke absorbs into the micro-cracks of the glaze, and the reduction of oxygen brings out the metallic lusters, leaving a distressed surface.

The title PROGENITOR is the idea that we all come from one being, a primogenitor. Somewhere in between is the realm of my existence in a vast spectrum of time. This is a series of hand built skulls and masks of varying ceramic clay bodies. I dream of a living species in a time that may have existed in the far distant past and how they would evolve in the future. An ancient civilization and the creatures that share the land. The hand sculpted skulls appear distressed to represent ancient aged bone material, as if excavated. The masks represent a time in the future, creature-like, humanoid, bearing slight resemblance to the original skulks. This mask is finished with bronze metallic glaze and portrays a feeling of armor. Join me on my journey as I discover this ancient species and link their evolution to the findings of the future.
